Dear Friends, family & supporters,
In a continuation of prior years' efforts, I have decided to, yet again, punish myself by squeezing into Lycra and strapping my behind onto a bicycle for three days in June and 200+ miles of Maryland/West Virginia/Pennsylvania countryside. My apologies for the scary image, but it's for a good cause, Food and Friends.
Food and Friends is a local area charity that six days a week, every week of the year, provides meals, nutrition counseling and friendship to more than 1000 people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses in Washington DC and 14 surrounding counties of Maryland and Virginia. Since 1988, Food and Friends has provided nearly 7 million meals and companionship to more than 9,800 clients, their loved ones and caregivers at no charge. Over 75% of their clients have monthly incomes lower than $1,000. For most of these clients, Food and Friends is their only support.
This Year's ride is organized differently than in the past. Food and Friends has partnered with One Less Car to participate, as a team, in the Cycle Across Maryland ride being held June 25 - 27. One Less Car is a group that work year-round to create a bicycle-friendly and pedestrian-friendly environment throughout the state. They work with various officials and groups to promote cycling and walking as viable modes of transportation. On Less Car organizes, promotes, and produces the CAM ride from their funds and from the riders' registration fees. What exactly does this mean for Food and Friends and you? Well, for the first time, all donations raised by Team Food and Friends' riders will go to Food and Friends in their entirety. Yep, you heard right, 100%/the entire enchilada/the complete kitandkaboodle/the whole nine yards (and I'm not talking about the Bruce Willis movie, either,) goes to the charity.
This being said, I need your assistance in reaching my donation goal of $2,000.00. Please consider sponsoring me for whatever you can afford. Donations must be in by June 1st for me to be able to participate with Team Food and Friends. I know that time is brief, and I do apologize for the short notice, but I had not committed myself to this great fundraising effort until recently. You can mail in the enclosed donation form or donate online at www.foodandfriends.org (direct link). Just click on Team Food and Friends; Sponsor a Rider; enter my name and search. Please remember, all gifts are tax deductible (just keep in mind how much your taxes were for this past year) and go directly to Food and Friends.
Thank you in advance for your contribution. It personally means a lot to me that you join me in this important effort. If you know someone who may be interested, please forward this letter and form on to them.
